Number of fatalities in a fatal accident in Mykolaiv Oblast has risen. Currently, 12 deaths and 6 injuries are reported.

According to law enforcement, as a result of the vehicle collision, the 49-year-old driver and 8 passengers of the minibus perished at the scene. Those with injuries of varying severity were transported to the hospital by ambulance crew, including the 49-year-old truck driver and minibus passengers aged 15 to 67.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the road disaster may have occurred due to traffic rule violations by the driver of a Nissan Murano, which was traveling in the opposing direction to the minibus.

Police have located the driver of the crossover vehicle who is suspected of causing the severe accident and fleeing the crash site. Law enforcement officials apprehended the vehicle several hours later on the Blahovishchenske-Mykolaiv highway. The 45-year-old driver was behind the wheel.

Mykolaiv City Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych announced that July 5th will be a day of mourning in Mykolaiv for those who died in the road catastrophe.

“A terrible accident occurred today on the highway near Mykolaiv. 12 people died, including employees of our municipal enterprise ‘Mykolaievelektrotrans.’ They were traveling for leisure with their families. It is very difficult to comprehend. This should not have happened. The police are currently establishing all the circumstances of the tragedy.

Sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased. Wishing the injured a speedy recovery. We are providing all necessary assistance to the families of the deceased and the injured,” stated the city leader.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his condolences to the relatives and friends of those who perished in the traffic accident in Mykolaiv Oblast.

Law enforcement is urging drivers to consider the information about the accident on the M-14 Odesa — Melitopol — Novoazovsk highway when planning their journeys.
